Did you know kids can suffer anxiety when getting their hair cut?

There’s a St. Louis area couple who opened a barbershop and salon to make sure haircuts are stress-free for kids.

“We aren’t going to pass judgment on the child who screams or throws a hoot during a haircut or the parents, because we know it can be stressful for the parents too,” said owner Bonnie Shepherd. “So they’re very appreciative that we have so many things to distract the children and try to make them happy and they just live what we do here.”

Bonnie and her husband Chad have eight children and own Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids in Lake St. Louis. Their youngest is 4-years old and has Down syndrome, which prompted the idea.

They say haircuts become less of a chore and more of a fun outing when kids come to their hair cutting franchise. Inside there’s a playground where Bonnie says kids can play and work off any nerves or anxiety they may have with getting a haircut.

Each station has what they call “fantasy chairs” including race cars, fire trucks and airplanes.

Right now there are four sensitivity-trained stylists who work with the kids.

“I think it’s an incredible change and really amazing,” she said. “I think it’s going to make a difference. Especially when you take into account the difficulties that a haircut can be for a child especially those who have severe sensory sensitivities it can make all the difference in the world.“

They plan on opening five more locations in the future.

One stylist even offers after-hour appointments specifically geared toward kids who need a little more attention.
