Metro East students honored local police officers for all their hard work to keep to the community safe.
Students at Mitchell Elementary School made a generous donation to St. Louis BackStoppers, the organization that supports families of fallen first responders.
Along with a T-shirt sale, students held a Pennies for Police drive where each classroom donated spare change.
The students’ hard work paid off by raising over 3,000 dollars.
“It's been a tough few years being a police officer, having an event like this is fantastic, knowing they took the time and energy to raise money to raise money to support the families of the fallen is just fantastic," said Lt. Mike Reifschneider of the St. Louis County Police Department.
Reifschneider has a personal connection with BackStoppers. After his father died in the line duty, the organization helped cover the funeral cost and supported his family for nearly 40 years.
